Guillermo Gonzalez Engelbrecht is the General Manager of Tourism for San Miguel de Allende The San Miguel Tourism Board, initiated by Guillermo in March 2005, is funded by municipal and state governments and by private industry. Raised in San Miguel, Guillermo holds a degree in Tourism and Hotel Management from the Universidad De La Salle Baja in Léon, Guanajuato. He has worked at The Instituto Allende where he started with Jaime Fernandez as a tour operator and went on to become the Dean of Administration. At the San Miguel Hotel Association he continued his promotion of our town, and in October 2003 he became Director of Tourism and Economic Development for the city. 26 February - Samantha Radovich on theRotary Scholar program and the program benefits The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships program is the world’s largest privately funded international scholarships program. The primary purpose of this program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Samantha received her master's degree at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (2005-2007) in the field of educational linguistics. She is currently living in Guanajuato, Mexico and working with the Rotary Clubs in the region on behalf of Monterey Bay Sunrise Rotary Club. In addition to service work, Samantha is taking Master level courses at the Universidad de Guanajuato to compliment her studies in the United States and further her knowledge of Mexico (i.e., Educational Planning in Mexico and the Relationship between Economics and Education in Mexico). While in San Miguel de Allende, Samatha will also be volunteering with the
Feed the Hungry program, to further her service work and professional interest
in education. 19 February - Fabiola Garcia on International Relations with the foreign community Fabiola Garcia, is the International Affairs Coordinator for the Municipality. As a consultant to the foreign community, Fabiola will explain how her office helps with expediting transactions across the border, providing a link between local government and the non-profit organizations, coordinating the Sister Cities program, and working closely in support of all major San Miguel conferences. In her latter role, Fabiola has been a key player in the planning of the forthcoming April Diabetes Conference sponsored by Rotary Clubs of San Miguel de Allende. 12 February - two special occasions (1) Citizen of the Year Award presentation (2) Madrigals and More Singers First is the formal presentation of Midday Rotary’s first annual ‘Citizen of the Year’ award to Saul and Linda Whynman. This award will be presented annually to the San Miguel resident who best exemplifies the ideals of service to our community over the past calendar year. Individually, and as a couple, Saul and Linda devote an incredible amount of time and resources to help improve this community. Next will be the chorus Madrigals and More, directed by Liz Stone. They will feature songs of American rivers in this performance, in addition to spirituals as they honor Black History month. The director has many years of experience teaching in the United States, and since coming to San Miguel has expanded into accompanying several musicals and reviews. The group itself includes both permanent and part-time members, to accommodate the large number of people who visit here just for the winter. In the past they have presented several concerts for the benefit of local charities.
5 February - Donald Kwait - "Rotary needed
now more than ever"
Don served the Rotary Foundation as a Trustee and Rotary International as Director, Treasurer, International Assembly Discussion Leader, Moderator of the International Assembly, International Institute Chairman, committee chairman and member, Task Force Coordinator, Rotary Information Counselor and District Governor. In 1982-83, he served as aide to RI President Hiroji Mukasa. He has received the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, the Distinguished Service Award, the PolioPlus Pioneers Award, the Legacy to Children Award and is a charter member of the Rotary Foundation Bequest Society. A Rotarian since July 1956, Don is currently a member of the Chagrin Highlands Rotary Club, where he served as president in 1998-99. He has served as president of the Wickliffe Rotary Club 1962. In 2002-03, as Zone Coordinator for the Polio Eradication Fund-Raising Committee, his zones raised over 11.4 million and were the second out of 17-paired districts in the Rotary world. 29 January - Club assembly - no speaker 22 January - Ann C. Lewis - ":Should Education be an Important Issue for the U.S.Presidential Campaign?” Anne has been writing on education policy in the U.S. for more than 40 years and still writes three magazine columns a month for different publications. She has focused the last 20 years on the education of poor and minority children and on education and workplace issues. An award-winning newspaper reporter and past president of the Education Writers Association, Ann lives in San Miguel full-time and continues her free-lance career from here. 15 January - Sra. Bribiesca-Rocha .on the functions of DIF Many foreigners have heard of DIF (literally translated as the “System for the Integral Development of the Family”) but know little about the function of this major governmental arm. Who better than to explain it than Gabriela Bribiesca Rocha, the Executive Director of DIF? She will put particular emphasis on the new DIF housing program. (“Mi Casa DIFerente”). She and her staff are also responsible for other DIF programs such as: providing basic food needs for disadvantaged children, help with providing day care facilities, prevention of domestic violence, and several other key social functions which Gabriela intends to discuss. Gabriela was brought up in San Miguel de Allende where she studied and worked until going to Madrid, Spain in 2003 to complete a Masters Degree in International Rights along with her husband, Cristobal Finkelstein, now Assistant to the Mayor and Secretary to the City Council. They became parents this past February to daughter, Alexa, an event which Gabriela describes as the “best experience of my life.”
8 January - Speaker: Dr Roberto Maxwell on the state
of medical care in San Miguel. Dr. Maxwell was born and raised in Mexico and received his undergraduate degree at the National University of Mexico. His internship was at ABC Hospital in Mexico City and his residency in Critical Care was also at ABC Hospital. He studied cardiopulmonary medicine at National Heart Institute Ignacio Chavez and was a Cardiology Research Fellow at the University of California at San Diego. He was Chief of Critical Care Medicine at San Jose Hospital for two years and has had numerous papers printed in major medical journals. Dr. Maxwell has been in private practice in San Miguel since 1987 and has been involved with the Red Cross here for twenty years.
